How To Get Involved...
The Florida District Export Council (DEC) provides a variety of opportunities for interested individuals to get involved in assisting U.S. firms who are seeking assistance in exporting.
The Florida DEC and its counterparts in other states are organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce to complement the efforts of its International Trade Specialists in more than 100 cities across the United States. The collaboration of the DEC and the U.S. Department of Commerce works to enhance the participation of U.S. firms in exporting. Working directly with the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Commercial Service offices, DEC members assist in such activities as mentoring, designing seminars, increasing awareness of the U.S. Commercial Service, and engaging political leaders in the Department of Commerce’s export promotion programs. Bringing the private sector expertise of the trade community to help facilitate solutions for clients of the U.S. Commercial Service, DEC members add significant value for individual firms seeking export assistance. The DEC also works to help coordinate the array of public, non-profit, and private trade assistance providers so as to better leverage resources and also avoid duplication of effort.
The U.S. Secretary of Commerce appoints Members of the DEC to four-year terms after a lengthy nomination and approval process. Membership at this level is reserved for individuals who have had a relationship with the U.S. Commercial Service and who have proven to be capable of providing the needed expertise along with a track record of sustained involvement with the DEC.
Affiliate members are associated with the DEC for special projects, ongoing activities, and to serve as candidates through this process for official appointment or for long-term participation as affiliate members, when appropriate. Many affiliate members are leaders in a field that supports export activity, such as law or logistics, or are leaders of international trade organizations that work with the US Commercial Service.
Aside from official or affiliate status, there is the opportunity to get involved with the DEC by simply attending DEC meetings or by contacting the U.S. Commercial Service or a current DEC member or affiliate. Involvement may take the form of assisting with a special project of particular interest, or exploring other ways to become engaged with the DEC’s array of activities.
